This time last year, my partner and I were looking forward to one thing:
We love going during winter, because it’s cold, wet, and generally miserable, which increases the chances of us having the area to ourselves. Most other people don’t like the cold and wet- but we… well, we don’t like the ‘wet’ 🌧, but we do love the cold.
We got some winter camping gear ready to go for a camping trip after first lockdown ended.
I remember having the booking tab open for a site, after having just locked in the dates, when they announced that we would unfortunately be going back into stage three lockdown (this was July last year).
And that was the rest of winter. By the time lockdown ended, it was sort of a bit too hay fever seasony for us to go camping, so we decided to wait until the following year.
In the interim, we got all excited about hot tent camping (thanks, YouTube), and bought a wood stove to have inside our canvas tent.
And finally, 10 months overdue…
We made it.
My new sleeping mat was amazing (my birthday present last year), my new sleeping bag was way too hot, our new pots and griddle worked great, and the stove…
F*** me the stove was HOT. 🥵
So hot, in fact, that we had to have all the vents and door open.
And we got to see some wonderful scenery…
Including this mushroom that was growing on the picnic table at our campsite…
And just… nature.
I’m so grateful that we’re currently not battling any local outbreaks or surges.
And I hope we can repeat this in winter, so that we can actually use all our gear.
