On a more positive note

Life is full of ups and downs. So naturally, if I write about the downsides of Academia and research, there’s also plenty of positives- it’s just that sometimes they’re a little more subtle and harder to find, or maybe it’s just easier to focus on the negatives. At the moment, […]

Toxicity

Looking back at it now, I know I was far too naïve. I guess I’d only worked casual jobs in hospitality up until that point, and my initial introduction to Academia and research was very positive. So, for some reason, I had this romanticised impression of what working in research […]

Gee, these plants are going gangbusters at the moment! Every day there’s a new flower, or a bud, or leaves… it’s a daily ritual to see how they’re going. I’m really looking forward to seeing actual growing ‘fruit’- at this rate I don’t think I’ll have to wait much longer!

SOON 👀

Not long now before I can officially start referring to myself as ‘The Doctor’… Less than a month to go! For those that are confused as to why I can’t claim my Ph. D title just yet, I wrote an explainer a little while ago. Please check it out!

After the initial shock of getting transplanted, the plant seedlings are slowly getting bigger and stronger. This is probably the most noticeable with the strawberries. I had seven separate plants growing in a small patch of a planter pot. Separating them all has meant that some of them got a […]

Why I didn’t do Med

I’ve written a whole series on my journey from a regional Victorian high school student to Ph. D student in my ‘How did I become #PhDLife?’ series of posts (see part 1, part 2, part 3, and part 4). But most people who go into Biomedical Sciences have a dream […]

🌱 #3 (and some cool ☁️)

So, I noticed last week that the plants were getting a little burnt in the hot Australian sun. Even ‘full sun’ plants can struggle a little, especially when they’re seedlings. So I had a bit of a Google for what I could do for them, and I asked my carpenter […]

A scary time of the year

I get really bad hay fever. Anyone who’s seen me out and about during Spring will know this. I’m sneezing, blowing my nose, my face is puffy, and I look like I’m crying 24-7. It’s quite awful. For the last few years, to make my life a bit easier, I’ve […]

A small photo update Turns out there were seven strawberry plants crammed into half a planter pot for about five years. 😱 Thankfully the roots weren’t too hard to tease apart, but this probably explains why the plant wasn’t doing so well. 😅 Bonus: now I have seven 🍓 plants […]

🌱

IT IS TIME!! After cultivating plants in pots for over five years, I’ve finally been able to return to using garden beds. I’ve grown plants in both pots and garden beds, but I’ve always noticed that they do much better in beds. These beds are made with treated pine sleepers […]
